Are you planning to refurbish your staircase? Maybe, you want the carpet replaced or have the stairs repainted? Whatever your plan is, it would always be good to have yourself and all the materials you need ready.

Remove the carpet. If you have a stair carpet, start by removing it. How? Firstly, lever up the carpet using a pry bar.  Using a sharp knife cut it from the back to divide it into manageable sections. Remove protruding nails and staples with a claw hammer, pliers or nail extractor. If you can’t pull them all out, just hammer them right into the wood and cover up any marks afterwards with wood filler.

Sand the stairs. It is best to sand the stairs if you are planning to stain or paint your stairs rather than lay a new carpet on them. Use a coarse 40 or 60 grit sandpaper and working your way up to fine 120 or 240 grit paper for a smooth finish. If you have budget, use a random orbital or belt sanding machine for the larger surfaces such as treads and risers, and a detail  sanding machine for corners and small stair parts.

After sanding, vacuum the stairs from end to end to remove all dust and debris. Using a large sponge,  wipe it with water and a mild detergent – liquid floor cleaner is ideal, as long as it doesn’t contain bleach. Rinse thoroughly and leave to dry for at least a day.

Fill in the cracks. To conceal nail holes, cracks and dents, apply wood filler or wood putty in as close a shade as possible to the color of your stairs. The compound will probably lighten as it dries out, so test it on an unobtrusive area first. Overfill the holes slightly because filler tends to shrink as it hardens. Sand lightly when dry to level the surface, and wipe with a damp cloth.

Upholstery Protection

The upholstery of the outdoor furniture defines the beauty of the furniture and they are sensitive most of the time. Hence, they should be washed properly. Use the right materials when washing your upholstery. Make sure to dry it properly to avoid the formation of mildew. It would be best to let it dry under the sun. If this is not possible, use blowers or electric dryers. Dry it until moisture level reaches zero. Apply a fabric protector which won’t damage the fabric. Apply it every now and then to bring more life to your furniture.

Frame Protection

Look for an Outdoor furniture protector which negates the bad effects of weather – sun’s UV rays and rain. For wooden frames, apply a normal paint. Pigments in the paint can protect furniture from heat and water. Do this periodically to avoid chipping and withering. Use gloves and masks when applying the frame protector of your choice to avoid any accidents or potential health problems.

Weather Resistance

A small stain can damage the appeal of the furniture. So, apply a stain and water repellant for every two years. The water repellent prevents the water from reaching the bottom layers of the wood and also fastens the evaporation process. Avoid using repellents, which have a high oil content.

Why Choose Wood for Your Home and Furniture

The market is now filled with wonderful plastic pieces of furniture and other items. Many people choose them over wood products because of their perceived durability and beauty. I’m quite biased towards wood because I  like it more than anything else. Let me share some of my thoughts on this.

Every  piece of wood is beautiful.  Every piece of wood is nature’s unique creation. No two pieces are very much alike. They differ in color, fiber, structure, etc.

Wood is durable. Compared to plastic and other materials, wood delivers more strength in proportion to its weight.

Wood is renewable. There sustainable timberlands which are managed to provide for cities’ need for wood. Wood in these areas are renewed through reforestation.

Wood products don’t harm the environment. Wood has low impact on the environment compared to aluminum, concrete, plastics, steel and vinyl. The production of these materials involve the use of non-renewable resources like petroleum and other carbon-intensive resources.

Wood is biodegradable and recyclable. Wood products decompose. Hence, they naturally return to the environment. Plastic, on the other hand, are made of materials which don’t decompose. These materials can stay in landfills for thousands of years unchanged.

Wood products are reusable. A wooden table, for example, can be chopped and made into smaller wooden products when it gets out of style. The same can be done with a wooden door, chest and other items. This may be done with plastic but the process it involves might damage the environment. wooden furniture

Wood is a natural insulator. Wood insulates against heat and cold inside the house or any infrastructure. This allows you to save energy. Statistics show that wood is 400 times more effective than steel and 1800 times more effective than aluminum in terms of insulation.
